2) Why the death wish? The accident that initially caused the damage could become a debilatating accident after your plan. Cars that have things like that out front are either tube chassis race cars that only see track use, hot rods that are more display pieces and seldom driven, or wankers that want to be cool and take pretty pictures. Extending any tube BEYOND the front of the strut towers is technically illegal in any car built to FIA 253 Article J. There is a ton of impact energy absorption built into the front end sheet metal of cars designed to take that load.

3) Why the wasted effort on something poofy? Fuck, you want to spend a bunch of time and money on a car, build a real race car and stop trying to impress other Volvo dudes. Start impressing chicks with your ability to build an actual race car and if you win, you will really start killing it.

4) Maybe you just want to build something cool? Okay, okay, I get that. I even sometimes think I almost like the act of building and working on rally cars as much as actually competing in them (only in delusional states where I haven't driven in too much time, but it happens occasionally.) But you missed the part where you are supposed to build something cool. 90s Volvos do NOT fit that bill. 70s Volvos on the other hand...

2)This is all I found on the website that mention anything about tubing framing forward of the cabin. It doesn't directly state it is not "legal", but definitely implies it isn't. Would you happen to know the section that mentions this in more detail? Oh and thank you for posting that as it was an excellent source for the requirements on building and designing a cage.

RE-shell into a GOOD car...not a POS with one fucked upper link on the axle.


That's all I'll say...


It was at about 25-30mph and I was in a full nose down dive hard on the brakes when my headlight acted as a bumper hitting the rear driver corner of a big Dodge trucks shiny pedestrian pusher. Nobody got hurt, and the car (besides the obvious) came out all right with no damage to the frame rail or moving of suspension/steering parts. I'm doing this because I need to get my car driveable instead of sitting in the driveway and since I know a guy in metal, this seems to be the most cost efficient way. And surprisingly enough I hadn't smoked anything that day. Maybe that was the problem.

You posted here asking for advice. The answer to your question is a resounding "no, thats not a good idea, just fix it the normal way."

I'm with Robert, electrical conduit. Or even better, just zip tie a fresh feneder on there, then some scraps of wood and sheet metal screws to mount your radiator and headlights. easy peasy, and you will be the king of TB...

You are going to get responses of people being anoyed with this idea here, because "not-rallycar" (NO rallycars have that, it is against the rules, find it yourself) and its a waste of time. Cheers!

I keep looking at the sample pics and all I keep thinking is if you're gonna use that much tube for a car that's meant to just putz around and have laughs in, why not just get a go kart or dune buggy or caterham type tube fun chassis and put your motor in there? There's plenty of kit places out there and honestly the amount of acceleration from the lack of weight should be... substantial. And a hoot. smiling smiley

Not just against the rules, it is pointl;ess. Just as a 745 wagoon is POINTLESS and Dave is obstinate on the conviction that he wants to do pointless things.

Al, I do like your idea cause if theres some vestigal scraps of the old inner fender,
maybe that might help keep out the pounds and pounds of dirt and rocks that will otherwise rattl;e around the engine room..

Dave you goon you make your dumb tube frame POS contraption work AND YOU'LL STILL HAVE TO BASICALLY FAB INNER FENDERS/WHEELHOUSING to KEEP THE MUD OUT and HAVE SOMETHING JUST TO HANG YOUR FENDERS AND GRILL OFF OF.

Accomplishing nothing but EXTRA WORK.

Okay peoples I get it, it's illegal for rally, and that is why this idea is getting scrapped. The end goal of this car is to rally it for fun, and if this will prevent me from being able to do so then I won't do it. Simple as that. But since we are on this topic of tube frames and such, I have another question. Are we allowed to build our own cages as long as it follows the design specifications here and here
and can pass inspection?

Never mind my abilities to weld one way or another, I'm wondering because it would be pointless for me to do so only to come find out that I need such and such certification and such and such license to build a passing cage.

The logbook issuing inspectors won't give a flock who built the cage, as long as it meets all the specifications.
