Steve at Hoosier has worked with me in the past to make some custom drag slicks for an event we run. They're pretty open when it comes to customer input.

Boy, am I glad that I learned the things I learned about tire sizing, before requesting a 255 width gravel tire...

Looking at RWD stuff, how much power before the standard Subabushi EvoRX sizes work well? Or does that just not happen?

Getting the bug to build a dual purpose car again (er, roadrace/rally, not rally/daily or something silly) so just wanting to educate myself.

I used to use 16-65-15s on the RX-7. Tried some 185/65-15 Hankooks and they didn't work all that well, so I went the other way and put 17-65-15s on the thing, which worked better. "Ah-ha! Need more width and also diameter."

A long story made short, I had to borrow some 185/65-15 tires and they worked friggin' awesome, way more grip in every direction. As it turns out, the reason the Hankooks sucked wasn't because of the size, it was because Hankook rally tires just suck.

~2600-2700lb car, 230-240?hp and 170?ft-lb torque.

I gave away all of my 65cm tires to someone who could arguably use that much tire. Yes, I know that I'm looking at rallycross and not stage rally, but I also would like to point out that car control and ultimate grip levels play a greater role. And that the person who keeps walking away from everyone else in the Mod AWD class is running sensibly-sized tires instead of giant by huge tires...

I'd say in the 180-200 hp range you'd start to want more tire.

If you read what the Froggie bastids who make the thangs say, 14/62 x 15 was "intended for Group N 2,0 litre cars with output circa 200 hp" and mentioned the diameter works well to not gear the final drive UP..

But what could a bunch of cheese eating surrender moneys know about gravel rally tires just because they made them?
We had to bail them out in 2 World wars!

And I'm very familar with the issues, having worked on NASA exploration contracts, mostly Space Shuttle and Space Station, for most of my career.

Cool, thanks. Wasn't quite sure about the intended power level for the 14/62x15s or the intended application; 200hp from an AWD turbo GrN thing or 2WD, etc. Totally different thinking on the rubber bits than roadracing, so input is great. Especially from Pete, given as how if I actually get off my ass and build something, it's going to be a 1st gen RX-7. If. I make no claims to being anything more than a tirekicker (ha!) at this point.

Looks like I'm seeing 175/70/15 crossreferenced as being the same size, more or less, and looks like a buncha folks make those (Pirelli, Dmack, those Black Rocket things, various others) even if Hoosier doesn't bother to.

The neat thing about tire sizing is that tires are wear items, and you will ALWAYS be able to sell rally tires even if they are worn to nubs, so go on ahead and try different sizes.

Sometimes simple price on a good set of used nullifies "ideal"..

Better something and be out throwing dirt than sitting waiting for the ideal tire.

Sorry Jason, just so many wierd ass things outta right (wing) field in recent years and one thing that truly does drive me nuts is this "America only" measuring system vs the rest of the world..
