Maybe when that ring ding gets some nice porting, reed valves, tripple 40 Weber IDF, trice-pipes, a close ratio box and a proper ring and pinion, and some Gp2 wins, then it'll be bad-ass.

But it'll still not be famous as the last Saab 96 to be in the last WRC event for which the 96 was homologated, the last WRC 96, that's bad ass.

I regret posting misinformation and appreciate the corrections.
Even if I had specified higher final ratio, the ring and pinion numbers I was using were still all wrong. Better now. Found more tranny info here.

And yes, single piston 5 lug front discs came on all '68+ 96/95 and 67+ Sonetts.
My 2 '67 96's were only daily drivers, driven foolishly at times but never raced. The column shifter was nothing special. Groping the co-driver is up to individual discretion. That aside, they were still lightweight tanks and a blast to drive.

2 Fresh 5/8" ID u-joints joined by a bar of 5/8" tube and that shifter will move about 4 " max from 1st to 2nd.
It is the best shifter I know when the u-joints are sound, just spread the fingers and catch a new gear while driving.

Yeah, I remember driving John's car (and even my '67 V4 Monte Carlo I had for a brief time). You could just stick your fingers out and shift while turning the steering wheel. Of course, you had to be creative if you had to, for example, shift from 4th to 3rd while turning right, but I think that's how the Scandanavian Flick got invented.

Interesting, isn't it, how the last SAAB 96 to compete in a WRC rally and the last Opel Ascona to compete in a WRC rally (two iconic rally cars, no less) are located in such close proximity to each other in the world?

The only time you might ever have to worry about having your fuel tested is if you enter a National event. And even then probably not.

I've been trying to remember the good synthetic stuff I used in my motorbike. It was pink, smelled like bubble gum and NO SMOKE. Of course it was like $10 a pint.

Now why would anybody want to rally an ugly VW Bug lookalike thing like that when they could be rallying a Subaru?
