Drag links they should work great kind of a pain to make but o well. They are 4130 tip to tip

I did on the inside and around the butt to the tube i know what your talking about
my ark is not good with the gun its inconsistent I think a resister is bad. its .90 wall so the open joints burn out on a good wire speed and heat but when my welder is turned down to do small welds it deposits poorly no matter the wire. I do have the hand for it and understand metallurgy to an ok existent So Tim ill make you one today no pulsing because I seem to have struck a cord. Truthfully in a part with only one load direction of pulling how much would annealing this part really help. Most of the toes of the welds are pulling perpendicular to the intended load. Also I feel its safe to say it would pull the bolt out before of the ears before total weld failure. PS the links are beveled and blasted on nice and hot. hot enough to start scaling threw 120 wall. I'm not trying to be a ass about it but you really don't have a handle on the metallurgy of what you are doing. There is a brittle HAZ right at the edge of all those welds. Just blasting it on hotter makes no difference...in fact it could actually make it worse depending on the joint geometry and cooling. You need to go buy a 1050deg F Tempilstik from the welding supply. Heat the whole joint evenly with a torch and let it slowly cool in still air.
Compensating for poor tube fit up by pulsing the gun is just making a bad situation worse. If you're sure that it's going to rip the bolt out anyway just make it out of mild steel. |

Tim, everytime you post something about welding/metal work, I learn a ton, but then have 5 more questions. searched for templestick....got it. so AFTER welding, heat to 1050 degrees and let air cool to strengthen the welded area? I guess I don't know what I'm looking for when you say there's a 'HAZ' at the edge? what's that? Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |

The process is for normalizing the weld to remove the brittle micro-structure at the weld border. There is no strengthening without a solution heat treatment. > > I guess I don't know what I'm looking for when you > say there's a 'HAZ' at the edge? what's that? HAZ is the acronym for Heat Affected Zone. That's the brittle martinsitic micro-structure next to the weld which will snap like glass if you don't torch normalize it or get the part properly heat treated. |

The tube is 4130 and the threaded in cert is 4130 already. The 4130 is just a ring
to people. they some how assume if its mild its like your building it with a coat hangers or something. I know what you are saying before I did it and the weld was not for poor fitments I am not saying your wrong at all I know what your saying and I understand. I may come across as confusing and not with full comprehension. But I think you would be surprised if you where hear and sat down with me and shoot the shit. I feel discounted for one thing and I understand why its not the greatest. I have been around and done quite a bit of studding and work with destruction testing of joints and weld prep. I am by no means expert at really anything but I did build and set up my own cnc table and a hand full of jobs and projects that show I'm not totally inept and have something going on upstairs. sorry just don't like being misunderstood I believe we could talk about tolerances and I could be somewhat on the same plane, not with the numbers but how parts work and stresses. The scarily thin wall , higher stressed by a big factor lightweight CrMo Husqvarna, Maico, and KTM frames were built and repaired migging without torch normalisation or baking. I've asked the actual injur-nears from each of those factories and they said: For this, not needed. Worked and lasted fine. Much like you John everything I write is composed of pure hyperbole... You can do whatever you want. If you look back I'm one of at least the three people to comment on the bad weld process and technique. |

I'd MUCH rather hang out with you or mr. taylor and learn about welding and HAZ than actually DO my normal job, which of course would require some effort and concentration not relevant to learning about cool rally shit. rally is going to put me in the poor house not because of how expensive it is, but cuz its gonna get me fired. lol Jon Burke - KI6LSW Blog: http://psgrallywrx.blogspot.com/ |
