I'm looking to do a hydraulic TOB for my Ford T5. The KEP stage3 pressure plate crumpled my clutch fork like a paper cup and I don't really want to spend hours trying to strengthen it.
What Hydro TOB should I look for John? I'm using the Volvo master, which I believe is 3/4" bore (need to double check that). The Flywheel is a Sooooper bitchin steel unit with .970" standoffs. Kennedy told me that I need at least .250" finger movement to release completely and no more than .400" movement without the risk of dmaging the PP housing. I'll be getting the required dementions this weekend. http://www.ramclutches.com/tech%20revamp%20910/RAM%20Hy3.jpg It looks like RAM clutches has the most inexpensive unit. Is there a better one? (yes the trans is back out of my car again) I like to play with cars, it's very inappropriate. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/03/2012 09:27PM by Magnum TE. |
I grabbed one for my f250 from rockauto, looks like they're at $65 now. I have heard somewhere (here maybe) that the aftermarket ones from summit/jegs/speedway can be garbage and leak crazy amounts.
And on second thought, they probably aren't the same since the f250 uses a different trans... so nevermind. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/04/2012 12:19AM by Robert Culbertson. |

From looking at pictures and from what I can remember, the ford trucks use a Mazda 5spd that uses a really long slave/throwout bearing combo. The T5 looks like it doesn't have nearly enough room to fit the slave. It might be worth it to take the trans down to autozone/napa and physically see if they slave will fit. 1 hr of time to possible save $150...

External slave cylinder, though. Me, I'd just weld some beef metal to the fork. Don't forget to reinforce the pivot, too. Pete Remner Cleveland, Ohio 1984 RX-7 (rallycross thing) 1978 Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver. |

I'm going to try to hammer the fork back into shape and add some material. It's pretty twisted up so if I need to source a new fork (75$) just to start over and maybe make it strong enough for the pressure plate -I'd rather go with a Hydro TOB and not mess with the fork. I did reenforce my pivot point pretty well. http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/rr191/Magnumte/Volvo/Goldie/T5%20Swap/IMG_0628.jpg The fab guy doing the install for me just didn't continue the beef when it came to the fork. http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/rr191/Magnumte/Volvo/Goldie/T5%20Swap/IMG_0623.jpg if you zoom in on the fork part you can see that half the structure was removed to fit the larger ford TOB. I should have known better to run it without adding structural support. I was pretty rushed when I did this last motor swap (blew a hole in a piston). I got a replacement engine 70hrs before race day, and I changed everything from the radiator back to the driveline. I finished at 4:45am with the driver's meeting at 7am, so some details were lost. I was dorking out in the fairyfield picknpull and found that the camaro gen 4 v6ers have a hydraulic throw out bearing that bolts to the input shaft bearing retainer ala the mcleod. The input shafts are the same as the ford mustakes, the as are the engagement points, the range of motion etc. Who knows how they fit in an adapter plate and bell housing since I dont have either now.

There are two ways to clock it, straight down, or out the cutout for the fork. The fitting is kinda tweeky and might be easiest (and more secure) to run a pipe tap. I wish the bleeder had a barb on the end so you could then hook up a hose and let her bleed without making a mess in the bellhousing.

I didn't realize you'd painted yourself into an adaptation corner like that.
Make extra sure that the Camaro throwout will retract enough. The 4th-gen Camaro T5 had a 3/4" longer input than the earlier boxes, and a deeper bellhousing to match. Why? Why not? IIRC it was also Ford bolt pattern, too, for extra fun. Crap ratios, because they were only ever used in the V6 models since the V8s were all 4L60 or T56. Its shown in the pic mounted to a ford mustang t5. Im not set on using it, only Id like to.
I found it in the yard, and paid a whopping $8 for it. You tell them its a throw out bearing and dont ask if its mechanical or hydraulic. Didnt mean to threadjack but I thought Id post it here as it might be a viable option. |
