The "real" XR4i's in europe came with the 2.8 V6, including the XR4x4.
And the 2,9 V6 later, a far better engine in that they upped the size of the cam bearings a bunch and went to chain drive, and re-iggered the valve arrangements so its ex/in/ex/in/ex/in tather than the old in/ex/ex/in then ex/in..The 2 exhaust valve next to eachother, a holdover from when the "grew up" from the V4 (the V4 came first) caused many a problem with localised overheating..
Such a shame Ford USA was always so stupid about keeping anything good off the floor at Ford mainline dealships that might make the flexy-flyer crap balance Mustangs look bad...Its funny that the things wrong with Xratties---for the market segment they were dreaming of----they never cured..
By '85 they had the large 7.5" diff with a good VC LSD in some V6 Scorpios---those go staight in Xrattie, they had rear disc brakes in all 4x4s, and by 86 the had very good inter-coolers in the Cossie 2wd...all the major faults had cured already on the shelf...but USA bean-counters figured they could sell the cars with no intercooler, no LSD and truck sized drum brakes..
And so they cut their own throats, and made an orphan car when they could have had a really good car....imagine 2.3 turbo diesel estate 4x4..
