WTB: VW 020 RnP

Looking for a RnP in 4:25 for a VW 020 transmission.


They seem to be nearly made of unobtainium, other than a few mystery parts on Evilbay from England, So I figured I'd ask here first.

I thought that you found one on e bay. I just bought a 4.45 from MTS Motorsports in Germany. It showed up in less then 4 days. The only thing was they only take a money transfer into their bank. So off to my bank I figured out shipping, exchange and sent them the money. I received the parts quick.

And minimum 4.47 or whatever, maybe shorter.
Divide 4.47 into 3.9

Calculate how much taller they gravel tires are than weenie street tires, add subtract...

4.47 maybe--4.76 mmmmmmm better-er-er maybe...

Yeah? With the 4.25 (that kurt found destroyed) in the car the gears felt pretty short as it is.

So what about an O2A transmission instead of the 020? Bigger gears, slightly heavier, cable shift that doesn't suck if you use an 02J shifter.
The final drives are more money, as are the gear kits, but they are so much better!

Just throwing more wrenches into the machine

A 02a with Czech made dog gear set
is what I may end up with but that all said and done with a good clutch and cable shifter should be around 5 to 6 grand. Wow that is real money. I want to rally on the cheap, so for now I am using a 020 gear box and driving to protect the gearbox. This means no jumping so I tap the brakes at every crest to keep the car planted on the ground (No impacts) or You can buy a stock pile of spare tranys and parts to replace the broken ones. Just sayin.

By far the weakest part in an 020 is the reverser gear. You need to come to a complete stop every time reverse is engaged!!!! Any metal that comes loose inside the box will immediately get picked up buy the ring gear. There is a small screen insert that can be added to prevent this.

Another important fix on the Golf is to add steering rack travel limiter collars. 8 to 10 mm thick will help to prevent CV joint failures.

I built an 02A with the Czech gear kit. The kit consists of modified VW parts welded together. It held up Ok.

FYI, Don't put a turbo on Golf rally car.

Robert, do you have any more info on this screen and where to find one? I'm about to open up my 020 to refresh the clutch pack in my KAAZ, so it would be a good time to add one.

FYI, I run a 4.81:1 FD which works well with my 175/70R15 (aka 62cm dia) tires. In my AGB transmission it tops out at just over 100mph. If I were starting from scratch I would go 02A, but between the FD and KAAZ I have too much invested in this box.

Boys pay attention here!
62cm tire is the ticket...and that is a bit taller---gears you UP.
So if you don't have a pile of 20-30 14" wheels go 15".
Corrado brakes will fit under 15 and they pretty darn good and pretty darn good is pretty darn good.
So if you go 62cm tire that's why I's saying 4.67 or even a tad shorter if you can find it...
100-105mph at around 7000 is plenty--the VW motor laughs at a mere 7000...
The main thing is you'll have better accelleration right up to top speed...

'member we don't go O to 60 all the time but we go 40 to 85mph about 10,000 times per event
Good torque and some gearing for some harder acc 60-90 ain't a bad thing..

Some boxes have the screen, some don't. I scavenge them out of junk boxes. I'm putting my last one into my car!

Call this guy. All he does is VW transaxle rebuilds. I talked with him for a long time about a rebuild on my 020 and 02a, and he mentioned the screens that he adds for racing. He also has a HUGE supply of used and new parts.

Something I have not had to deal with yet is that there are two sizes of bolt holes in the crownwheels for clamping it to the diff.

A 4.25 with "big bolt holes"

Also something to note is that the crownwheel IDs can vary. 109mm and 111mm. So if you have a 111mm OD diff from a 16v with 3.66 FD, then it will need machined down to accept a 109mm ID crownwheel.

EDIT: And if using a standard 2Y code 16v gearbox with 3.6 FD and converting to a lower FD, then 4th gear (1.12 ratio) needs to be changed for a gear from an 8v box as the pinion shaft is a different diameter where 4th gear runs.
