Dude, I love my Saab. 2000 lbs 170 bhp+ 5.45 final drive, steel clutch plate diff, close ratio box with 2.45 first, wicked quick, light accurate steering, good brakes. history (I was the driver of the last 96 in a WRC rally, THIS same 96)

And I can drive a stock Xratty in the woods quicker.

I think you may be preachin' to the choir, John - I'm certainly not dead-set on building the civic, but invested enough (and financially strapped enough) that I'm in "careful consideration" mode right now. Lots of measuring and documenting to do this fall/winter before I make any decisions...

[And, realistically, I'm leaning towards the ovlov anyways - as much as I prefer the looks of the merkur, just too rare for me to deal with]

Holy cow! That's a killer deal!

If I could afford another car right now, there's a durn good chance I'd pick that up. It's taken a LONG time, but the Xratty has really, really grown on me, especially when that gay third side window is removed for the Sierra one. Cheap, reliable power with great handling to boot. Aaron...I support you on picking this up. winking smiley

Depending on what happens with the Datsun after a few more years of racing on it, (as in, if I break more fenders before making fiberglass copies), I may be in the market for one of these, or even, John, are you ready for this? A Volvo 240.

That's a joke between Ben and I. When he sold the Fuckus he was looking around and I was, of course, pushing the 240s thinking ya know, more chance of spares easier, and he was twisting and squirming and i asked WTF man, and he said "they're too boxy!' and then the next question was 'what about the 140 Volvo?" The 140 and 240 from A pillar back were same, the 240 had struts and a rack and a little angle to the cut of the nose---the 140 was squared off---MORE BOXY-ier!!!

So now I have to poke a little now and then.

All in good fun.

I felt I had to chop the window and had to get the whale tail but it really is the window that makes me just gag and not totally puke when I walk up to a Merkur.

Hain't that the truth...ya know Grant as a near certain marker of future "oh no" face palm type brilliance is if a guy says (probably while touching himself and with the perv twitch in his eye) "oooooooh I just really lurv the rear windows, they're so _________________" (classy, unique, uniquely classy, classily unique...or whatever...)"

Faaaawk.

I just love the 80s styling.
When I was deciding between Volvo or Merkur the Volvo had multiple pluses in the looks department in that there was much less needed. The Merkur needs windows cut out, a whale tail, and euro headlights and bumper and grill. Thankfully the Jetta bumper mod came along and works so well. Wasn't that Sean's doing as well? At least the best executed example for sure and what inspired me to go for it.
Rare?
I've bought two and missed another by a day and all have been driveable and under $1k. Also have a free shell that I just have to go get whenever I want/am ready for it. There's another that's been on craigslist here for months for $1900. I emailed the guy a realistic offer of $900 for when he gets desperate. Same goes for the $2000 Starlet that's also been for sale for months...

And there are multiple people that focus on having parts for these cars. So far Merkur Parts Midwest, run by Jeff Blugg, has had any part I've ever needed.
