Jeeeezuz Christ man, I'm oafish-ally in Burien. On the very North edge of Burien and oafishally only since 1 April this year...
Well yeah but what the fawk that's normal---and it ain't an age thing so don't think I'm getting all "geezerey" on ya, it's simply a matter of experience making decisions, and living (somehow) thru them long enough to survive the unbelievable stupidity of them---I left home and moved to Sweden when I was 17 and took with me about $400 (and spent about $120 to buy a car in East England then drove in December---straight to Berlin to see this HOTina 23 year old German girl who was next to me on the flight from Oakland to Frankfurt---fawking brilliant. No heat in the RHD car---seriously there were wicked icicles hanging off the dash, and i ran out of gas in the middle of the 400meter "Dead Zone" between East Germany and Berlin---where the East Germans had signs up "Do NOT STOP in the next 400M--Lebensgefärlich" Brilliant. (The were allowed ( it was their land) to open fire on any vehicle stopping---East germans trying to escape were known to run out and jump in vehicles just before they exited the "Dead Zone"
Fer phuques sake you gonna be a neighbor---and "Rallymech" Robert Gobright is just 2 miles over thataway-----> or ^ that way, get a fawkin Xratty or a 240. Those Eclisped Talon things have ONE THING going for them: a pretty good motor. Crap gearbox ratios that really hurt them, inadequate brakes, a strong box but they are all pounded now, and rebuilding them so they will shift with scary grunches is spendy. ALTERNATE ratios CAN be found---for big money. The interior is really cramped and you sit on the floor and try to see between the top of the dash and between the steering wheel---if you're my height---statstically the average height---and REALLY cramped by big broadshouldered guys, and REALLY horrible with a helmet on.
You have it backwards. You get a cheap ratmobile to daily drive so that you can use scarce money for the critical bits. And the parts that make the car work GOOD.
It's not you "can't" its just it costs a shit-ton of money for a car and a service rig. And I was under the impression you don't have bundles of 100s just strewn around.
Where does he live?
Where do they live?
Not really---I rolled mine on stage 6---and the fenders all four corners screw on and off with 12-13 screws, I had a business that was 99% ther model car I was beating---and had mountains of extra doors, fenders, hoods, glass, everything.....only took about 9 hours to "rebuild it" but I wasn't smiling....
Wait till you move here, come by and visit. Talk to me and Robert (VW guy---it's genetic since he's German---oh and remember DON'T MENTION THE WAR) and Sean Medcroft, maybe Al Kun who I's scheduled to co-drive for at Mt Hood,
Buy a running ANYTHING for a daily, but cheap. A running Le-gassy or whatever. Buy a free to $400 Xratty or Volvo. make sure there's oil in the box and the axles and motor. Get suspension and a GOOD sumpguard.....beat it someplace safe and with some experience person or persons guiding you. BURN UP A PILE OF TIRES. Play drifty-daze, Grass-o-cross, track day, and practice someplace with you can not dip the toe in but splash both feet over the line without serious penalty---- Cle-Elum/Easton and Eastwards toward the Columbia looks very promising since there's very sparse trees and you can see a mile or more, and sionce it's on THAT side of the mountains, WAY less traffic, and little to no ditches. While you're beating on the car and getting jazzed---install cage. Find shorter gearing and a T5 so you can utilise the insane TALL overdrive. (You understand what I'm saying in that last bit? If not call on the phone, I have typed way more than i want to on this whole subject) That was the car has good strong yank 1-4th and you can cruise 70-75mph in 5th and not scream it and slurp gas.. That gearing thing, the NEXT critical thing after suspenders is something you CAN do very easily and cheaply in THOSE 2 CARS and virtually no others at the costs of those 2. Living in the PNW I'd get a Merkur for sure. Between John, William, and Sean you have access to knowledge, spares, and some of the best rally parts available for any car.

Seriously. Think of any disadvantage or desire in a rally car and a Merkur pretty much gets everything done.
Power is easy. Gearboxs? T-5. World Class with decently close 1-4 gear kits are $295. Gearing? Toyota Supra diff swap is a bolt in affair with the kit William and John made. 4.3 and up with clutch type LSDs. Reliability? How about the rear beam strengthening kit, designed by Sean, made by William. How about the square beam that John built and is getting ready to go into Sean's car. Toss on Sean's front arms and compression strut and you will have to really go off bad to result in a DNF due to suspension failure. Brakes? JVAB WRC replica brakes. JVAB dual master pedal box. Suspension? JVAB. And on and on and on and on... |

who around your area can build a cage? i would consider buying it if i could get a cage installed in the red shell, and have the drivetrain dropped into it from the black one? |

John you have to try instead of saying "I would consider ....." something like "fawkit, 2 cars for $1000 bux! Wooo Hoooo! I want 'em, lets do it." Then say with certainty "Right now who can do a cage tha's legal?" John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Two specialty recyclers and two to three suppliers of new parts. You can even source new sills still for low price.
Sean developed a mod to fit a Mk3 Jetta bumper cover, available for $35 from Certifit. I'm on my third windshield. Some people have made a big deal about them being hard to find but I've never had a problem and paid $100 and $160 installed. The rest are easy but also easily and legally done in Lexan. I didn't do the fronts cause I was lazy and like power windows in rally cars. Though I think if you just want to get out and rally ASAP, nothing beats a GC Impreza or 91-94 Legacy. Cage, JVAB or similar suspension, Porterfield pads, Primitive skid plates, go rally. I'm hoping to start my cage next week so I can come run Big White in December. Maybe the Perryville event in October. |

Why? Put the Murkweird back together and run Big White with some studs. Other than the race all weekend & put away wet aspect of the Open Light car, I don't see the appeal over RWD (which you already own). Weren't you the one touting how little work you did on your car between events? Nothing says fun like being sideways everywhere even at stock power levels (which you had). Besides, wasn't Scott talking about how he wished he'd built a 2wd car instead due partly to the number of competitors in class? MaxAttack! Dave |
