Any Starter Cars Near Michigan?

Midlife crisis strikes - looking for entry level stage car. I've seen plenty in Northwest but surprisingly few around Detroit. Any leads welcome.

Welcome to the nuthouse, you'd be better off buying one from the west,
they won't be as crusty as what you've got available in the salt belt...

This one might still be available. Put an engine in it and start rallying.

Its FWD so it's priceless....

Here's one in Chicago that you can build really easily....cage, suspension and maybe a diff and you're miles ahead.

http://www.rallyanarchy.com/phorum/read.php?7,53181

It's a friend's and any junk-n-stuff needed is just laying around...

The beauty of these is they are quick enough STOCK for several years growth and development, there endless levels of development you can do if you are the sort that always want to upgrade upgrade upgerade, and they are preoven quick and easy to drive....

Want a motor with potential for a bazillion BHP? No problem.
2,3 8v, or 16v volvo head on the ford bottom end, or Cosworth YB, all easy.

Want to be able to be competitive in a car as 2wd and then convert to 4wd, no problem...everything for 4x4 conversion is in stock...

Think about the cost of the very likely upgrades. FWD= big money and marginal strength.
RWD= mere fractions of FWD parts costs and big upgrades in strength..

And a strong engine/box/diff is a good thing for a privateer.

Thanks - I do like the idea of RWD and Merkurs in particular. All the guys I've spoken with tell me to start with a beater and save the build for later but I'll definitely give it some thought.

Well, you are in the right place to get a car built by an experienced, but currently out-of-work rallyier. If you wanted to pick up the Merkur, Matt @ bentmettle could help put it together for a reasonable price.

How much would he charge for a legal cage?

Asks the guy who always responds to that exact question never with numbers but always with a 'use the phone and call me'.

It will depend.

Well for $400 bucks it's cheap. Tony said an hour ago he could scare up an OK motor for maybe $200, a box for $75 and all the ffofy junk like bumper covers and grills are just laying aroud at "Blugg's" shop there....

Then: Suspension for about $1900, seats where ever you can find 'em that fit, belts from Safe-Drives and some sumpguard and some sort of LSD---talk to Tony, he has at least 3 Supra diffs now, Grant has who knows how many, I have 6-7---that's not a problem now..and off you go.

With something that hasn't been both pounded to death AND fawked with by savages like most rally cars have been.

OK - I found a 323 GTX SCCA club car in MN but cage is 1.5" (it will need some gusseting and other cage updates) but can I even work with that cage? It has an SCCA log book but no RA or NASA. Price is very reasonable at $2,700.

Brad, seriously, don't think about 323s. There's detailed reasons in various threads here especially in response to the young guy in the thread here in For Sale called:

OK John, I'll take your advice... how bout one of these?
by WRCWRXSTI

So aside from a useless cage that will have to be cut out and redone, there's the "Whatever-they-are-calling-Rally-Car-in-America" rule (for everybody except big money recycled "Extreme' heroes) that noobs cannot start in turbo cars, and living where you're living, you're right in the belly of the beast--so to speak.

The "Group 4 Escort MkII for America", the Volvo 240, or the "510 of the 00ies", the Xratty ultimately are soooper fun as turbo cars, but CAN very realistically be perfectly competitive as Normal Aspirated....

They are in essence the spiritual opposites of the lightly built, weak, short, lacking poop, no regular parts available, don't even dream of replacement gearbox parts, and forget any specialty parts (except suspesnion---truth is I've made Soooper Bitchin Suspenders for Maz-dogsspinning smiley sticking its tongue out ), never was any good really GTX..

No advantages, many severe disadvantages. Financially a potential disaster.

Do you have the Coeffs to run the glass that car falls into? here in the northest it would be easier with the hillclimb events and team oneils. you may want to look into finding a spare GTX to donate spares and panels. i made the mistake of thinking i could easily find a escort GT in my area. turns our sourcing parts from out of state already exceeded the going price of another car...
