Does anyone have one they want to let go of for uber cheap? My current one grenaded, (the kid I bought it from obviously beat the hell out of it) and the one I had as a spare, somebody STOLE! Which I just realized tonight. I think they snagged it when they came for the free grill I was giving away, just to get it outta the yard. Jerk-off pricks.
If you have one, or know of where I can get one for uber cheap, drop me a line. The ol' racing budget is down in the mid triple-digits, which is very worrying... Anyway, have a good one! |

have you cracked the case to see what the problem is? It seems like, as long as the gears and shafts are intact and not damaged, you'd be better off rebuilding it rather than buying one in unknown condition.
Dunno if this link has any helpful info - blocked at work for me. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/240sx-transmission-the-basics.html This pdf has all the clearances etc - http://www.240edge.com/manuals/98_240sx/mt.pdf |

Integral bellhousings. It's probably easier to list the 3-4 Japanese boxes that aren't integral than those that are... Now with a band saw and a donor case I know I could make it woik. 82-83 280zx turbo had a T5 apparently, and bellhousing from same allegedly bolts up to the ka24... no idea if the gm T5 with the decent gearing would bolt up to the bellhousing though. L engine from the 280 sits at a ~10 degree angle, and KA is vertical, so the shifter ends up a bit cockeyed. also believe I saw a mention of having to do some hacking to make the starter bolt up... |

If it actually bolts up KA24 and whatever the z-hell it was then get a bellhousing and case and a 380 gearset with very good ratios...Look for blather about boxes for Xratties and Volvos John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! I have a spare, but third gear grinds something furious, and my intent is to go through it, and repair the damage so I have a good spare.
I wish PPG didnt want $6000 for a gearset, ish. Just out of curiosity, what were you running for gear lube? I ran Amsoil at the first event, and the trans went from iffy to no bueno. For LSPR I swapped in my spare, and it went from fine to borderline iffy. I am currently running RedLine. |

I'll keep a lookout for the zx trans, and probably rebuild this one if possible later. I found a guy who might have a ka24 pickup trans, which is supposed to bolt right up, and is just a smidge shorter than the longest 240sx trans, which is fine. Plus it has more robust bearings.
Here's the gearing for the truck trans. It's decent, no T5, but decent. The jump from 1st to second is better than the 240sx at least. Pickup: 1st.... 3.592 2nd.... 2.057 3rd.... 1.361 4th.... 1.000 5th.... 0.813 rev.... 3.657 240sx: 1st... 3.321 2nd... 1.902 3rd... 1.308 4th... 1.000 5th... 0.759 Anyway, I was running Lucas HD oil in it, FWIW. I have no firsthand knowledge, but from what I've been told by a friend who tried to put a 240SX trans onto a truck:
-The truck transmission is short enough to be significant. (Pictures? http://forums.nicoclub.com/240sx-trans-into-hardbody-t394307.html ) -The shift isn't in exactly the same spot. (likely not a big deal) -The starter holes are threaded on the opposite side. (which I think means you could keep the 240SX starter, and drill out the tapped holes on the truck transmission) Anyway, worth looking into those points. I foolishly gave away my pile o' transmissions when I sold my old 240SX, but I do see them pop up often enough on craigslist. I would be interested to see how well a T5 fits with the Z bellhousing... |

Get as many as you can, you'll be fabulously wealthy! You can finance a whole rally season! Supply and demand. Now we just gotta find cheap T5 boxes like sub $50 so it makes sense to throw in the right 2.95 first gearset.... Oh note well boys, a T5 can be the funnest box for mere hundreds but watch out for what 5th you choose, try and get a 0.72 or .78. Alperti Kunkanenen got a Ford T5 in his mighty Volvo 240 and happened to get the 0.63 top gear and even with 4.88 axle that 5th is toooooo tall. (with the indeterminate miles 2300 n.a. junk yard motor he has anyway) All joking aside, it's worth making some effort to get a decent box with decent ratios---it is a central part of the drive experience and it can really make a car more funner-er, or be boring. I say more funner-er is more fun. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember!
