so whats the deal with these? I have seen a few pictures of them rallying in the past but they seem a little bit scared these days. Also rather crampyed in that engine bay? Are they some sort of bees knees of 80s rally?

They are incredible piles of putrid porpoise poop, just plain bad junk.
However there was one guy who had been around forever and who obviously could talk some talk that fools believed based on a record of "production" class wins. Problem is all of the so called "Production" class guys all cheated like bandits and this Guy was King of the P class Cheaters...they even admitted some years ago on SS.com the sort of things they cheat at and justified it like good ol' boys they are "Sheeeeeut, everybody was doin' it"

So yeah somebody drove one for a while because it was free and they had no shame..

(Ya know i build motors right? And I build some fairly hot ones. I know what a 8:1 stock POS motor sound like and here's the Guy with this thing and its idling like 1300-1400 rpm going "ba'ba'ba'ba!!" and good healthy puffs 3-4 fett behind the tail pipe, serious pops.
I amble up to the old Guy and ask kinda Lightly "Gee golly mister that thar rally race car shore sounds rad......what class is that in?"
the old Guy says "That's a Peee car, Production, now go away boy ya bother me...."

Me "gee whillerkers that shore sounds kinda rad-eee--kal for a Peeee car, mister..."

"Oh we turn the ignition timing up 5 degrees and they sound like that, now gwan son get lost..."

Lying sack of withered shit didn't blink an eye

If there ever was a car that made the Tempo look like a good idea it was a Chevy Citation.

Total proof that you can rally anything and likely have fun. At the end of the day the absolute best rally car is the one that gets a guy on stage. This however doesn't change the fact that a Citation was a terrible car...almost as bad as the Cadillac Cimaron fiasco...

What's wrong with a Cavalier with leather? It's practically a Cobalt LS! grinning smiley

For $950, I would rally a Reliant Robin, a box van, a damn Caddy. But If i had to pay regular prices, no way.

My brother made a pickup truck out of a Citation. I think at the time it was 5 years old, and he paid $5-600 for it then.......

I don't think I actually saw a Cimmaron with leather, but its been a while and even the shitty things get forgot...

Actually the later model Cobalts, Cavys and Escorts were pretty good cars. Back in the day tho...those x body GMs were flat scarey. Crap carbs, crap trannies and rear brakes that would lock up and throw the car in a skid even while parked... they even had a frickin emission flag that would drop at 60k (?) and totally cover the odometer until you went to a dealer and got it reset. Nice.
