Rally Car:
Building a Merkur

G5 Merkur for sale. **Sold**
December 31, 2012 05:47PM
1989 Merkur XR4Ti G5 rally car $15,000

Cage was done by Derik Neson, fits extremely tight, and stitched to the chassis in multiple locations. Door x with a sill bar, roof V, and tied in to front strut tower, and rear shock tower. Cross bar at rear strut tower, also 2nd tube from the rear stay at the shock tower to the bottom of the main hoop. RA logbook.

Interior:
Body was prepped from an accident free shell, some seam welding, all interior holes were welded shut. 16ga intrusion plates welded into both front foot wells. Seat supports made from dom tube, inboard side of tunnel boxed to allow seats to be moved closer to the center of the car.
Sabelt Taurus headwing seats, G-force 5 point cam locks, still current, Terratrip 303+ on a custom adjustable mount, Terratrip intercom, navi light and footrest. Pelican case hard mounted for tools and jack. First aid and spill kits in canvas bags. Foam cutout in spare tire for electric impact. Triangles mounted to each door, and one in the rear hatch. One fire extinguisher mounted in front of navi seat, and one in the rear hatch. Custom steering column that is adjustable in/out approximately 5”, and up/down maybe 1”. Wide pedal pads with griptape. Full rewire using aircraft circuit breakers for all systems, and rockers for all switches, mounted in a custom carbon panel. Interior is fully painted with the same paint as outside. The rear compartment is trimmed out with real carbon fibre sheet. Wideband o2 gauge, programable rev box that drives a custom dash mounted shift light. OMP wheel with quick release.

Exterior:
Fully prepped and painted with single stage paint. The white and dark blue are paint, and the light blue and silver are vinyl. Converted to “Sierra” style side windows with lexan. Twin roof vents. Custom hood vents. OEM Ford Sierra Cosworth rear wing. MK3 jetta front bumper. Custom light bar with 2 PIAA XT 80’s, and 2 Hella 2000’s. Stock tank with a AC delco 90psi pump. Kevlar skidplate, full HDPE underbody. HDPE wheel house liners in front arches.

Drivetrain:
Engine was rebuilt with stock crank, rods, pistons, ported head, ported intake, ported exhaust manifold (E6). Stock T3 turbo, Volvo radiator/intercool package, and custom upper intake. Running on a stock T-bird ECU and VAM, with a APEXI electronic boost controller. Gear based boost settings, with 2 separate programs. Can make anywhere from 100-230hp depending on settings.
Borg Warner WC T5 box with the 3.35 first, and a tall OD. 300 miles since all new bearings and seals. short shift assembly. Light weight flywheel with a centerforce PP and oem solid disc.
One piece driveshaft connected to a Toyota Supra diff, with 4.3 R&P and a Wier performance 250lb diff upgrade kit
Motor mounts are custom, moved to the frame rail from the crossmember.
Trans mount is a JVAB unit.

Brakes:
Twin master cylinders operated by a modified stock pedal assembly with a balance bar, and increased pedal ratio. Fronts are JVAB kit, willwood calipers on custom hats with coleman 11.250 (i think) rotors and hawk pads. Rears are mk3 jetta front calipers and ford focus 11” vented rotors with stock pads. CNC “staging” brake for rear hand brake.
All hoses are braided stainless, and hard lines in the cabin.

Suspension:
Fronts are JVAB 40mm bilsteins, freshly serviced. Front arms are 4130 cro-mo utilizing honda accord ball joints, making them replaceable, and heim joints at the pivot end. Front compression struts are also 4130, and also heim joints. cully adjustable for caster, camber, and toe.
Rear suspension is JVAB Bilstein coil overs (one rally since new), JVAB/TSS custom square rear beam with a TSS diff mount, all solid. The car will come with stock rear arms, as I just found a big crack in the TSS custom tubular arms.

Wheels:
5 Arcasting Rally wheels, and 4 Saab 9000 wheels. 4 Lasa tires, good condition. could throw some practice tires on the saab wheels.

Spares:
Spare front control arm and comp strut. spare radiator and intercooler. Axles, wheel bearings, belts, fuel pump, water pump, tune up stuff, ignition module. and other stuff I am forgetting.

The car is extremely well balanced, and very easy to drive. Weight distribution is 51% front. I just finished a 3 day at Dirtfish with the car and it did not miss a beat. I do have a few re-prep things to do, and modify some stock rear arms for the car, so it could be picked up January 15th or so. I know I have missed some stuff, as I did so much to this car. It has to be one of the nicest rwd cars out there. I really don’t want to sell, but life throws you a curve ball every now and then.

Please e-mail me at runphlatrally@ g mail for any questions, or shoot me an offer.
I can give you my phone number too if you want to talk about the car, for that just pm me.
I will deliver within 1 days drive for gas money.

Aww, man. I'm sorry to see this up for sale. What a cool car.

Good luck with the sale! I hope this doesn't mean you're done with rallying.

Sorry to see that, most of us have been in the same place at some point am sure. Having to sell something you really don't want to but life comes first before our hobby.
Am looking at the possiblity of having to sell our Talon toosad smiley. Need to buy a house and quit renting this one this year. Great looking build, I have been looking at the pictures and pulling ideas for our car.
