WTB: Stock XR4Ti Springs
February 18, 2013 10:08PM
Hey guys,

I'm picking up a relatively clean XR4Ti this weekend. We'll see what happens to the car in the long term, but for now I need to get it in streetable condition. Unfortunately, the PO cut a coil from the front springs and the car has extremely little travel. I'd like to get back to stock ride height.

I know several guys around here run these cars, so I thought I'd ask: Does anyone have a set of good stock springs they'd be willing to sell me?

Thanks!
Jay

There are lots of people close to you, you should also post to Merkursport. I don't think I have a stock set around.

Haha, that's a problem. Well, let me know if the other front coil shows up tomorrow. Otherwise I'll ply the Merkur forums.

By the way, you wouldn't happen to have a timing cover too, would yeh? Always need somethin more it seems!

OK I'll check in the morning and post.
And timing cover, no..Too many have been tossed and the miserable back part dies routinely.
Any Ranger junk should work.

Have you called Jeff Herson at Merkur Parts Midwest. I guarantee he has a set laying around.
But what you should really do is get some good aftermarket ones. I'd suggest 850 rear springs and 550 front. That should be perfect.

I called Jeff this morning but the line was busy. I would consider ordering springs from MC2, but I'm not sure what rates would be best. The car will be a daily for a little while, but then it will turn RallyX slut and if I like the platform well enough, I hope eventually it will become my first rallycar build.

With that in mind, I'd really want to pick spring rates that are reasonable for gravel and dirt use. Would you still recommend 550/850 f/r? The car has newer struts but I doubt they're much better than stock.

Fucking brilliant suggestions, Grant. The Troll force is strong....

Jay, evidently Grant is trying to be funny by posting the advice of some true idiots who are notorious conesquishers who reccomend outrageous sping rates between 300-500% stiffer than stock rates and then sell boring ordinary KYBs or unknown valved Konis which are intended to control stock springs..
Can you say severely underdamped?

5 people who have followed this advaice have called and began their call by saying " I hate driving my car now and I don't know what to do.."

Now grant could have put some smiley face thing to let you know he was playing the goon but he didn't..
So don't make a gross blunder and listen to his joking...

EDIT: So you are aware of "those guys" I see. "They" collectively clearly have no clue at all about what is correct for anything but driving in a asphalt or concrete parking lot, and really not even that.

For Grass-o-cross I'd use no more than a 125 lb in front so the damper is not overpowered, and in the back try a 275..
Grip is the name of the game and for grip we want weight transfer...

And MATCHED suspension is always preferable to severe over or under damping...

I thought the first suggestion may have been a tad stiff... eye popping smiley

Thanks for the more reasonable suggestions. Any idea where I can find properly sized springs with rates like that? The guys at MC2 seem to be pretty tarmac focused and only offer stiffer parts. If all else fails, I'll go with their softest selections for now that still allow stock ride height.

For grass-o-cross, go stock and KYB grey things in front, White things in back...
