Now those are good links..$400 is great----cheap enough to do some stuff..

One of those 16v 4s fersure can be built make so OK powerz---and a little creative work can get a box with good ratios behind it...

Yeah...like you,I'm really not a BMW guy, but neighbor has one (semi-beater condition 318ti)parked outside and something about the compacts is intriguing.....

And I like the idea of keeping the lightweight 4 banger too- but damn it's hard to find ways to make it get out of it's own way without a used(discontinued) supercharger kit or a home brew turbo.

A whopping 138 hp....

Maybe figure out a homebrew itb set-up ,a tuning solution and throw some gearing at it?

Here's an article on final drive I found:

http://www.318ti.org/notebook/diff_conversion/

But if the automatic 318ti's came stock with a 4.44 final drive,I wonder why don't people just put those in the manual trans cars?

Yeah I dont usually see them this cheap.. a semi local search shows private party cars right now at $2100 ,two at $3000, and one at $4600 and one at $4900.

Thats More typical pricing when I search....

Even then ,many of these cars when I search for them often are salvage ,and even though some of them are modded- here in LAlaland easily 75% of them are slushboxessad smiley

We've got four of them around that were bought for 500-1200.
2.8L OBD2 swaps with M3 cams are plenty.
There are two diffs, small case (~6.8" ring gear) and medium (8"winking smiley. The four bangers have the small, six have the medium. 4.44 is only small case. 4.10 with LSD is best stock option for these.
We'll have rear turrets done within next couple weeks for these. Quite a few other things we are working on specifically for the Compacts.
Will have a rental Compact available next summer.

So Grant -for a race car the small case is weak and should just be avoided right?

Particularly if you are upgrading the engine Horsey's substantially from the awesome stock 138 hp?

Small case an embarrassingly miniscule 168mm aka 6.6"
Medium case ...An OK for low powered n.a. cars maybe safe for 200 ftlbs 188mm aka 7.4" (compare DANA 30 at 7.2" or stock Xratty at 7.5" )
Large Differentials 210mm--a nice strong 8.27"....
Quote

Generally used behind early M5, M6, V8,
V12, some early 7 Series and E 46 M3 engines

As with everything on BMWs I say "Got a 320 E30?...move up two steps on everything for rally"

Of course no alternate ratios that are any good for the large case ones leaving the just barely enough for 190 ft/lbs but probably undersized for the 3.0 24v variocam thing

Certainly could help to make the solid spacer mod and ditch the collapsible spacer on the pinion..

Small case is fine. Ask Jari.

If you insist. I like nice safe margins...and I like choosing good ratios without going bankrupt.

Maybe I can re-find that place I got the photo and you can tell them that that diff is fine...

It's fine.. BMW are perfect in every respect. oil pump failures, valve locks failing and dropping valve , cast iron lower shock single shear mounts snapping off right and left, diffs breaking in half, ring and pinions shreading teeth all over....all owner/operator errors.

That diff is fine.
